Sabina Egan is a professional artist based in County Galway, Ireland. Her work is strongly influenced by the time she spent studying structural engineering with architecture in UCD. The pursuit of this degree has led her to appreciate the hidden intricacies of structures and how they are constantly moving. From high rises to petrol stations, sabina strives to conceive how the different elements that create a building are interacting with their surroundings, and above all, how the mechanisms of stability are hidden behind the facades. After receiving her qualification in engineering, Sabina decided to study fine art in NCAD. Here she spent four years refining her interests and creating a way to convey how she interprets her surroundings. Her work there earned her a commendation, and she was acknowledged as one of the top ten emerging artists by temple-bar gallery and studios.

Artist's Statement:

‘Usually engineering is invisible, but engineering is what constitutes our everyday life’ (Mackin, 2013) My work is based on the aesthetic quality of the hidden engineered components within structures. Through minimalist abstract paintings, my aim is to display the artistic merit concealed beneath decorative facades. My process is to question the boundaries of art within engineering, and engineering within art and my paintings have various aspects of this work process. I have gathered images from construction sites, and isolated specific elements to be painted onto canvases of various sizes. The outcome is a range of paintings highlighting an engineer’s contribution to an artist’s vision
